Patriot Day is an important day in American history. But, it can be a bit scary for younger students. Is there a way to do it justice without causing anxiety? A good compromise is to focus on the first responder lessons. This commemorates those who put their lives on the line every day for the good of the community.
Anxiety in Today's Students
Discussing 9-11 in class may cause anxiety and worry. Teachers today see much more anxiety in their students to begin with. Therefore, we need to handle this topic with thought and planning. There is no need to go into detail about the Twin Towers. But, just like on that day, the first responders went right in to help. That’s what we highlight.
First Responder Lessons
Young kids today are obsessed with fictional heroes. They can and will benefit from the study of real life heroes of their community. Studying the types of workers, job responsibilities, and tools of the first responders will bring your students calm and understanding of what a community means.
Emergency Workers
There are many kinds of emergency workers. Students may be familiar with police and fire fighters in their everyday lives, but they might not be aware of all the other services. It can be an eye opener for students to realize the many other types of jobs.
Some first responder activity ideas:
- brainstorm a first responder list as a class
- match the workers with the type of emergency
- explore the workplace in the community
Job Skills and Responsibilities
Each first responder has its own set of job skills and responsibilities. Exploring these will help your students begin to think about what type of job they would like to have. It will help them match their own likes and interests to the job.
Some first responder lessons ideas:
- matching the worker with the responsibilities
- brainstorming the jobs of each worker
- exploring the training required for that career
Tools, Clothing & Workplace
Emergency workers need to be able to do a specialized job. There are many items that go along with this. Sorting and classifying is the most beneficial activity you can have in your primary classroom. It supports reasoning skills and language development,Including this during Social Studies is a win-win!
Some first responder lesson ideas:
- Sorting uniforms and tools into the different jobs
- Using picture cards to write robust sentences
- Comparing and contrasting different jobs
