If you want to have an End of the Year Camp in your classroom, you will need to decide your objective for Math. Do you want to use the month covering new topics? Do you want to work on graphing? Or, do you want to let each student work on the skills they need. Here’s what I do:
I Organized by these 5 topics:
- Number
- Operations & Algebra Strategies
- Geometry
- Measurement & Data
Number Games
For my lower Math students, you can use this game for number recognition and the make an order line with the campers. Your on grade level kids can work on even & odd. For your above level students, you can use 3 digit numbers.
My kids love this game! Your below level kids make numbers and write the numerical form on their white board slates. On-grade-level students can mix the number forms to compare numbers to 99. For above grade level students, you can add hundred logs.
Addition & Subtraction
This one can be made with straws to give your kids the fishing feeling. My kids loved playing this in the “stream”. This is the on-grade-level game. You can also use just the addition to 18 fish. For above level kids, use all the fish and rods at once and use a timer!
Here is an addition game. In first grade, the objectives are to subtract tens from number to 99. Also, they subtract single digit number from number to 99. I tape and staple the marshmallows to brown pipe cleaners to add to the fun.
Geometry Games
This game is played with a spinner. Everyone starts with one whole piece of bread. Then, they spin to complete 5 layers of the sandwich. The winner completes the top layer of bread first. My kids like to play this by the campfire!
Measurement & Data
This activity is about non-standard measurement. I use real sticks and leaves to keep with the nature theme. But you can use bugs. I put small trees in the tub, then the pairs measure the campfire, the stream, the trees, and the picnic tablecloth. We make a huge chart that goes up on the focus wall. Pairs fill in the data.
The last activity is for graphing and school year closure.They ask the class a question about summer fun:
- Would you rather fish, hunt, or catch bugs?
- Can you like to camp in a tent, cabin, or hotel?
- Do you like rivers, beaches, or lakes?
- What do you like to roast?
- How do you like to travel?
They work in groups of 3-4 students. Groups record the data, then design a graph and glue it onto the big white tablet paper. When all are finished, the group shares out. Then the each group must write 3 sticky notes about the results of their graph, and 3 o other graphs. This is one last team-building activity.
