Learning up to this point has been decided by the teacher. End of the year is the time for the student projects to choose and engage in what they want to learn. Students can choose their method to show their learning. Using a Choice box, teachers can suggest creative outputs. Just a few ideas:
Write a SONG about yourself.
Make a VIDEO like a short documentary.
Write a POEM
Make a BOOK that explains your favorite topic.
Construct a POSTER about a problem or viewpoint.
PAINT a MURAL to show your favorite world.
Make a GRAPH. that shows your favorite kinds of music.
Put together a MOBILE of your favorite book series.
Make a TREE with writing on the leaves.
Sew a QUILT Use paper or material.
Make a BOARD GAME with details from your favorite series.
Design a DIGITAL GAME Use Seesaw, Google Slides, or Scratch .
Make a PIZZA BOX PIZZA REPORT.
Write a SANDWICH REPORT that tells how something is made.
Make a CAKE REPORT where each piece is a different fact, making up the whole.
Write a BOOK that explains your topic.
Construct a SCULPTURE of found items.
Design a SUITCASE. Fill it with show and tell items. Have kids guess the character.
Make a MAP showing where the character went.
Fashion a BACKPACK from paper sacks.
Make a SLIDESHOW about your topic.
Create a POWERPOINT explaining your point of view.
Make a PUZZLE that tells a story.
Compose a RAP about a global issue.
Let Students Choose
The research process for all projects will be the same. Note cards will answer the questions; Who-What-Where-How-Why & When. Each will make a trip to the library to find resources. In our district, at least one needed to be digital.
This is your student’s time to shine! I arrange my choice board by : Speaking/ Listening, Reading, & Writing, and Art. We spend time introducing the kids to the many choices. The first thing they choose is their topic. Then, they decide what form they want to choose. Everyone has a set time to show their project. We do all the work at school during writing workshop. We go through the researching together:
- Choosing at least 3 sources.
- Writing facts to share on note cards (some draw pictures)
- Constructing project.
- Presenting to the class.
